What Is Parent Taught Drivers Ed?

Parent taught drivers ed is a state-approved alternative to traditional driving schools in Texas. Instead of enrolling your teen in a commercial program, you serve as their driving instructor while they complete the same TDLR-approved curriculum online. Your teen earns the same DE-964 certificates accepted at any DPS office — at a fraction of the cost. We serve teen drivers in cities across Texas.

Our course includes 24 hours of online instruction, the official DPS permit exam, instant certificate downloads, a built-in driving log, and a parent dashboard to track your teen's progress. Most families complete the entire process — from enrollment to provisional license — in seven to eight months. Learn more about how parent taught drivers ed works, or see the Texas PTDE forms and driving logs you'll use along the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not sure if you qualify? Check your eligibility

Teens can begin the classroom phase at 14 years old, but they must be at least 15 years old to apply for their learner's permit at the DPS.

The instructor must be the student's parent, step-parent, grandparent, step-grandparent, foster parent, or legal guardian. They must have a valid license for at least 3 years and a clean driving record (no DWI/DUI convictions in the past 7 years).

The PTDE Program Guide is a required packet from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. It authorizes the parent instructor and is required before applying for a learner permit. Driving hours can be tracked using our built-in digital driving log or TDLR's separate form.

After getting the learner permit, your teen needs 44 hours of supervised driving: 7 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction and 7 hours of observation with the designated parent instructor, plus 30 hours of practice driving (including 10 at night) with any licensed adult 21 or older. Our built-in driving log makes tracking easy.

Our course is a one-time payment of $60 with no hidden fees. That includes all 24 hours of online instruction, the state-approved DPS permit exam, DE-964 certificates, interactive driving logs, and email support. Additionally, throughout the process there are payments made to the State of Texas, not our company. These are a $20 packet fee paid to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, and about $16 for the learner license at the Texas Department of Public Safety — with a further ~$16 DPS fee later for the provisional license. Our company does not control these fees and they are subject to change.

The DE-964 is the official Texas Driver Education Certificate your teen needs at the DPS. There are two: the learner license certificate (issued after completing 6 hours of instruction and passing the permit exam) and the provisional license certificate (issued after completing all 24 hours of classroom instruction). Both are available for instant download from your course dashboard.
